In the hood

John 1:14 says “The Word became flesh and blood, and moved into the neighborhood.” (The Message)

There’s something about this version of verse 14 in John 1 that I like. It’s a little more close to home, a little more like you or I would say, “And made his dwelling among us.” Because honestly, when was the last time you used the word “dwelling” or “among”?

Now, don’t get me wrong. I actually don’t prefer “The Message” translation of the Bible. I know lots of people do, and they’re good people. I’m just still a little old school, I guess. I’ll take an NAS anyday.

But this verse strikes a chord within us, doesn’t it? To know that Jesus took on flesh and bones, and moved to where we are. But why? To be close to us. Believe me, it wasn’t the neighborhood that was appealing. It was you and me and nothing more that caused God the Son to leave the unthinkable amazement and splendor of heaven to come to a cesspool (comparitively speaking) like earth. It was for love of you and me.

If Jesus went to such lengths to show us love, how can we go to great lengths to show love to Him and to others? Give us some ideas of ways you can live God’s love. Use the comment section below!
